After Clone and Crash System on D: Boot on C:

$

Problem:
Cloned two SSDs C: to D:
C: was system and boot drive before D: clone
Boot crash occurred which required repair with original Win 8 disc

Now under Disk Management
C: has "Boot", D: has "system".

Windows reports that C: is system Disc (flag on that drive)

Under EasyBCD
Boot Manager is D:
Boot Loader order is C: D: (which has no name, tried to name it but that renamed Easeus PE boot instead) and Ramdisk C: Easeus Pre Boot

I would like to restore C: to Boot and System so I can remove clone D: Without completely rebuilding system.

Boot Menu points to .iso file, but where is iso file?

I've used EasyBCD 2.2 to add a Boot Menu entry for an .iso file, and it works fine, but when I found that I could not remember where exactly the .iso file is that this entry points to, I could not find this out anywhere in EasyBCD. Did I miss something obvious? How to find out where the ISO file is that an entry points to?

installed windows 8.1, Norton ghost 15.0
hardware two drives. drive 1 has two partions.

initially vista was installed on drive c. afterwards vista was upgraded to windows 7.
with Norton ghost i made an image of the system. i restored this image to check. it worket perfect.

a couple of days ago i installed windows 8.1 on the c drive.

i wanted to use w8.1 and w7 in dual boot. (easybcd)

i restored the image on drive d. this came without problems to an end. however the restart of window 7 was not possible. the system retured with an invitation to log on at a domain. i had to provide userid an pasword. no idea what to provide. i expected a normal start of w7.

i contacted Norton symantc chat room. there they informed me that dual boot was not possible on the same drive. Is this a true statement.

if not true how can i solve my problem.

Can no longer start XP

I've had XP and Win7, on two different disks, installed for years and running fine. I recently added a new drive (for backups only), and while I was at it, I merged the XP partition with another, unused partition on the same disk. Since then, I've been unable to start XP; when I select that option during the boot, it just goes to a black screen.

Per the attached Disk Management file, the System partition and Win7 are on Drive 0. XP is on Drive 2. No changes were made to Drive 0, and the only change to Drive 2 was the merging just mentioned. (By the way, partitions 1 and 3 on Drive 2 are image backups of Drives 0 and 3.)

In EasyBCD, I tried deleting the XP reference and adding it back, with no success.

The first time I tried booting to XP I got a "missing ntoskrnl.exe" message. I checked in XP's system32 folder and sure enough, no ntoskrnl.exe. So I copied it from the backup drive; since then I get no ntoskrnl message, only the black screen.

Thanks for any suggestions!

just downloaded easyBCD to my new W7 computer which has my old Vista HD installed in it also. I can now boot into my old system to use my old programs - great! One thing I dont seem to be able to do ( & I realise this may be nothing to do with easyBCB) is to get online while I am in the old HD. Should this be possible?

Thanks in advance,
& I have made a donation!

Hello, I accidently changed the boot partition using EasyBCD. Here is a photo of what I did:
http://i.imgur.com/MoO0eiV.png

As you can see, I changed the drive to BOOT. (Im using my other pc to show you)
And now it goes to the boot selection where I can see Windows 8, and when I press enter, it shows an error. How can I fix this? Thanks!

ALSO: Its a windows 8 laptop and I tried many things such as Windows repair disk and Hiren thing but It didn't work

Windows xp, 7 and 98 (and several linux)?

Happily running XP, Vista and 7 plus linuxs on a laptop and netbook (as I recollect, after the Win 7 install it automatically appeared in the (Easy)BCD menu).

Now have installed Win 7 on a PC which currently has (had!) a rather different arrangement with win98SE, Win XP and linuxs and now Win 7. Hitherto Bootmagic was the first level loader which offered Windows (leading to a choice of XP or 98SE) or various linux via each grub. This worked very well over the years for my needs.

However, since installing Win 7, things are rather different. It has replaced Bootmagic with its own (bcd?) menu offering Win 7, Win98 (which fails) and "An Earlier Version Windows" but which leads to the original (XP) menu offering XP AND 98SE which both load as previously.

Could I use EasyBCD in XP (or 7) to modify the new menu to offer Win 7, Win (leading to the abovementioned XP or 98 choice) plus, of course my linuxs which are currently inaccessible? I doubt the bcd menu could give direct access to 98?

---------- Post added at 06:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:24 PM ----------

It would seem that my first suggestion works fine!

However, there is still one problem - the non-functional Win98 entry still appears in the bcd menu but does not appear in Easybcd so can't remove it? Does it require some sort of edit in Win 7?

Help! Can EasyBCD ruin BIOS?

Hi everyone, sorry to be another person complaining that I can't boot after using EasyBCD, but that's the case and I can't seem to find enough info regarding my situation. Let me start at the beginning. I got a new laptop, Asus X55C, (I can give more specs if that would be helpful) with Windows 8 on it. I want to dual boot with Linux Mint So I installed that on it's own partition but I got no GRUB menu. It just went to Windows every time. I found EasyBCD and decided to give it a try. I added a boot option under Linux/BSD and pointed it to the partition with Mint on it. Then I rebooted and got the Windows 8 screen for selecting which OS to boot. I selected Mint and the computer rebooted. Then a screen came up indicating that it was trying to boot from the NIC card but failing. I rebooted the computer and went into BIOS. The ethernet controller was at the top of the boot list, with 5 options below it, 4 of which read "windows boot manager". I moved the highest one to the top and rebooted. Now computer will barely turn on at all. Nothing at all on the screen. Not even the boot logo. It doesn't even flash like the backlight is coming on. The HDD and numlock lights flash on for a second or so then go off. The power light stays on but thats it. Pressing f2 gets me nowhere. A bootable USB with Ubuntu gets me nowhere. I am at a loss for what to do. I don't think this is a hardware issue, especially after reading some other peoples posts who are in similar situations. Is there a way for me to reset BIOS? Is that the issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Nick

Windows 7/XP Dual Boot-Boot MGR Missing every restart.

I'll start with what I'm trying to get done, and then what's going wrong. I'm looking to Dual Boot with Windows 7 and XP, while having 7 installed first. I have two SATA HDD's, one is a 1TB, and the other is a 640GB. I'll refer to the drives by their size from now on, to avoid confusion. I originally used this guide to help me install this.

Originally, I wanted to leave my 640GB as a backup drive, so I partitioned the 1TB into two halves, leaving Windows 7 on one. I installed XP to the second partition, and kept running into errors. Boot MGR missing, ntoskrnl.exe missing, etc. The only way I was able to get around that, after several startup repairs, was the oddest procedure. I would tell the system to boot from my Windows 7 OS disc, and then ignore the "press any key to boot to CD" prompt, which would then prompt me to choose what OS I wanted to boot into. If I didn't do that, it just got stuck at whichever "____ is missing" screen it decided too.

Okay, so got fed up with trying that configuration, as I had a feeling my boot files were being put on wrong partitions, or whatever was going wrong. Imaged back to my clone I made right before this whole mess. So I decided to do it what I considered a slightly easier configuration. Keep Windows 7 on the 1TB, and partition the backup 640GB drive to have XP and my backup drive. I was able to install XP no problem, get .net Framework installed, downloaded EasyBCD. I was prompted with the "Windows 7 BCD cannot be found" prompt, and wasn't able to edit the BCD in XP. So after a few startup repairs, was able to get into Windows 7, install EasyBCD, add the XP menu option, and check out the settings. I noticed my NST folder was pointed to the backup partition on the 640GB, so I moved the folder to the right partition, and used EasyBCD to tell it where it was. Then I restart, and am prompted by the BOOTMGR is missing. I disconnected the 640GB, booted into the Windows 7 disc, and I've tried 3 start up repairs, and then a manual repair via command prompt and /FixMBR, /FixBoot, /RebuildBCD, with a restart in between each. I shutdown after the final try, reconnect the XP drive, boot up, and hello BOOTMGR missing.

Where am I going wrong? As of right now, I can't get into either OS. I have hands on all installation discs, as well as another computer if need be.

Thanks ahead!

Edit:

Almost forgot, I do have BIOS set to boot from the 1TB first out of all devices. And as of right now, I got the boot loader menu showing, allowing me the option to choose which OS it boots into. But I have a feeling BOOTMGR is going to go missing anytime now. So let's keep addressing this as it's not fixed. Ill update again if I fixed it myself! Thanks!

EasyBCD does not find Windows XP install

I have a Win 7 and Win 8.1 dual UEFI boot on a GPT disk (Disk 0). I installed Windows XP on an MBR disk (Disk 2). When I try to add an XP boot entry with EasyBCD (running on the Win 7 install), I get an error that EasyBCD failed to detect a valid installation of Windows NT-2003 on all mounted drives and was unable to continue.

When I select Disk 2 as the boot disk, it boots the XP install just fine. I recently did a clean install of Windows XP on Disk 2.

Thanks in advance for any help.

How to restoring to default boot entries?

$

I was using my windows 8.1 machine with easybcd, easyre etc to fix a windows 7 sp1 machine which had stuffed up its MBR/boot record.

So i've fixed the Win 7 machine but in the process I accidentally stuffed the boot entries for the windows 8 machine. Stupid I know..

Is there a way to recover or rebuild it? All the images and easyRE are on this machine so yeah.. in a bit of a bind.

I followed this guide before restarting (had an idea this would happen) Fixing the Windows Bootloader via the setup DVD but it cannot find bootrec.exe

Any help please?

EDIT: Basically i'd like to know how to revert to a stock standard window 8.1 boot order. Thanks!

edit2: just booted into easyRE and tried automated repair. Says it cant find any windows partitions.. uh oh.. Though it may be only looking in the USB..

I'm very new to linux and this program. My situation is I just installed ubuntu to an external hard drive, and I want an easier method of choosing it at startup instead of having to interrupt startup and choose boot from USB.

Going from a tutorial I added a new entry: linux/bsd, type GRUB2, drive auto. After restarting the menu comes up, but it goes nowhere after selecting ubuntu. It loads GRUB4DOS.

Running windows 8 on my main drive.

edit: I reformatted/re-installed and it is working now for some reason.

EasyBCD has a problem with new disc

I bought a bigger SSD. Partitioned it like the original one.
Filled all partitons - one by one - with Norton Ghost. Then booted.
It didn't.
So I repaired Windows 7 with the Windows Repair Disc.
It then seemed that EasyBCD 2.2 did not reflect Windows Boot Manager. So I installed EasyBCD 2.0.
I adjusted three entries to drive F:\ (instead of none), for DOS (Win98), Linux and Windows XP.
I copied Ang0 and Ang2, that I appearently missed out the first time, from the original disc.

Boot Manager (EasyBCD 2.0):
There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader.

Any idea what's happening?
It appears that I can't just copy from one disc to another.
There must be a work-around, isn't there?
Btw, I hate reinstalling.

Hi Everyone,

I want to dual boot Windows Server 2012 and FreeNAS on a machine I have but EasyBCD doesn't seem to boot to the FreeNAS partition, however it works perfectly fine with my Windows Server 2012 partition. If anyone is able to help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Editing BCD entries from XP in a dual-boot XP/Win7 environment

$

I looked through a lot of material on this site but could not figure out how to do this.

I have a PC that can boot into either XP or Win7, the latter being the dfault. When I'm booted into Win7, I can use EasyBCD (or the command shell) to change the default OS to XP at the next restart. When booted into XP, is there a way to change the BCD entries so that it will reboot into Win7 at the next restart?

The reason I need to do this is that the target machine is remote and I can get a remote desktop session going when its booted into either OS but I'm not able to choose the OS to boot into at the lower level (pre-boot?) prompt.

Thanks.
