Hello all. A bit of background here:
I have Windows Vista Pro set up on a machine with a pair of 1TB drives in a mirrored configuration. Some time ago I started to observe problems and I ran a couple of virus scans that didn't turn up anything. Then I downloaded the AVG PC Rescue and Repair Toolkit so I could boot from a USB key and do a more thorough scan. I downloaded the software & set up the USB key from a separate computer, and the affected computer has been removed from my network.
That scan found 20-30 infected files, including some system files. Whatever was done to repair those infections left me with a machine that would no longer boot Windows.
The computer is about 5.5 years old, and my searching would not turn up my Vista install CD, and (shame on me) I had never made a recovery disk. So after some research I came upon EasyRE and today I gave it a try.
The first problem is that it sees the 2 mirrored drives as separate devices, which means that every operation has to be performed twice, or I'll end up with a corrupted file system. This was a big disappointment. I have no idea what would be involved in correcting this, but consider it an enhancement request.
Anyhow, I ran the virus scan on both drives, and it seemed to find the same 8 infections on both drives. Having deleted those files, I used the most recent System Restore Point, and the restore operation reported success on both drives. When I tried to restart the computer, the boot still failed.
So, this time I tried the "Automated Repair" option. It fails with the following error:
What logs? Any thoughts on what's going on here? Any suggestions for next steps?
BTW, the error I'm seeing on bootup is:
